Massive Fire Erupts at Geelong Oil Refinery in Corio, Australia

A massive fire has broken out at the Geelong oil Refinery in Corio, Victoria, sending thick smoke into the sky that can be seen for miles.

Emergency services are on scene working to contain the blaze at the facility, which is one of only two remaining oil refineries in Australia. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The refinery is owned and operated by Viva Energy and plays a critical role in the country’s fuel supply. The site supplies more than 50 per cent of Victoria’s fuel and around 10 per cent of Australia’s total fuel demand.

More than 1,100 people are employed at the refinery, which has a processing capacity of up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. It produces a range of fuels including petrol, diesel, jet fuel, LPG, avgas, and low aromatic fuel.

Viva Energy supplies roughly 25 per cent of Australia’s fuel overall, making the site a key part of the nation’s energy infrastructure.

It is unclear if there are any injuries at this time. Authorities have not yet released further details as crews continue to battle the fire.

This is a developing story, updates will follow.
